crash in egypt. know youdent needs to cannot shoot his way out of this, the warning from the new u.s. secretary of state john kerry. his comment, and head of a critical meeting in rome, which is bound to raise the prospect of more american assistance from the syrian opposition. it is a potential ship, which the national correspondent wrote about today. she joined me a short while ago. what might be serious be prepared to offer the rebels now? >> the americans have been coordinating with other governments in the middle east and europe. americans are now behind on this issue and have now been prepared to step out rapidly. there are two categories of assistance they are now prepared to give. one is direct, nonlethal assistance to the rebel fighters. and the other is direct humanitarian aid and some financial assistance to the political opposition. in both cases, the americans have been very reluctant up to now to give help directly to the syrians offering -- operating inside of syria. they have given nonlethal assistance. they have not given any at all up until now. >> what the syrians

in doubt. province.n idlib >> young faces of syria's war. the new u.s. secretary of state, john kerry, said the obama administration was looking at more steps to fulfill america's obligations to those innocent people in syria, but it is the threat here at home which also has the white house concerned. a series of automatic spending cuts known as sequestration will take effect at the end of the week if a deal is not reached in congress. it is the latest round of political brinksmanship in washington. secretary kerry warns that is the biggest threat to american power abroad. i spoke to the head of the council of foreign relations. he joined me from new york. what does the secretary mean when he says that it is congress that is the biggest threat to american power abroad at the moment? >> it has the advantage of being true. unless the united states economy begins to grow, now growing at about 60% of our historic rate, less than 2% as opposed to 3%, we have unpredictablility. chances of growth are going to go down even further if kundera -- government spending is cut through sequestration. all

of last year we saw that the u.s. economy was starting to slow down again. from your perspective, how do you see the state of the american economy? >> it is still uncertain. we really need to get the economy growing. the only way to get jobs is to add and grow the economy. the economy will not grow as long as government intrudes and tells us what to do. there is a lot of shore that we would like to bring back. the tax coming back on that money is way too high. >> we know that jobs and growth will be a big part of the state of the union address tomorrow night. the new ceo has been down at the white house talking to the president. >> he is going to really focus on growth of the economy. the only way to get jobs back into this economy, we are barely breaking even on jobs. we have got to create at least 100,000 jobs a year to keep up with the growth in the population. we are pushing very hard to push the visa waivers. we would love to have that for brazil. they would absolutely love to come to america. >> along side with that, would you like to have comprehensive immigration reform? >> i thi
